The Shikimoribito (式杜人), often referred to as Shikimori (式杜) for short and alternatively called Guardians in the English dub, are a collective of merchants that specialize in the production of electric cells. They trade their cells with the nobuseri in exchange for rice, and likewise they also have peasant refugees grow rice for them at their village in exchange for providing them refuge. In the Japanese version, the merchants are voiced by Naoki Makishima, and in the English version, they are voiced by Markus Lloyd.

Appearance[]

The Shikimoribito are human beings who wear large brown cloaks with yellow colored on the joints that cover their entire body from head to toe. Accompanying the cloak is a gray metallic mask with green lens in the eye holes, with the right eye being circular while the left eye is horizontally rectangular. Overall, these outfits are worn to protect themselves from the shock of the electric cells that they produce and deliver frequently. Their real faces are never seen.

History[]

Great War[]

During the Great War, the Shikimoribito were samurai who fought valiantly. After the Great War, whereas other samurai mechanized themselves and became bandits (nobuseri) who served the victorious merchant class, the Shikimoribito stopped being samurai but instead became their own type of merchant.[1] To survive, they built their base inside a deep cave beneath the Kōgakyo citadel, and they began trading with both the nobuseri and the capital.

Merchant era[]

When the nobuseri began terrorizing and destroying villages across the land, some peasants fled their homes and came across the Shikimoribito Village. There, the merchants allowed them to stay but in return wanted them to grow and harvest a special type of rice for them. Although the farmers despised their nobuseri trading partners, they reluctantly agreed to help the Shikimoribito with the harvesting since they needed to survive.

Trivia[]

  • Ayamaro is the only member of the Shikimoribito who was known not to be a former samurai.
